New Bataan, Davao de Oro – A Belgian national was discovered dead inside his rented house in New Bataan, Davao de Oro, on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Local authorities identified the victim as Marc Ivo Vancutsem, a 68-year-old who had been residing in the province for over a year.
Vancutsem was found with multiple facial injuries, which authorities believe were caused by a metal pipe discovered at the scene. The victim’s wife, a Filipina, reportedly found his body the following morning after spending the night elsewhere due to a disagreement with her husband.
Suspect in Custody
The New Bataan Police have arrested the husband of the victim’s helper, who is now considered the primary suspect in the case. According to Police Chief Maj. Darwin Aguilar, the motive behind the murder is believed to be jealousy.
“Allegedly, the main reason behind the crime was jealousy,” Aguilar said in a statement.
The suspect, who denies involvement in the killing, claimed that there was no evidence linking him to the crime. He further stated, “I did not kill him. If I had, there should be evidence. I could not have killed him, especially since he was my friend. He was my godfather, the ninong of my child.”
The Suspect’s Background
Family members of the suspect have described him as naturally jealous, a trait they believe may have played a role in the tragic incident. Despite his claims of innocence, the suspect remains in police custody and is facing charges of murder.
Investigation and Next Steps
The victim’s body has been taken to a funeral home, where it will undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, local authorities continue their investigation into the crime.
The Belgian Embassy is currently working with local officials to facilitate the repatriation of Vancutsem’s remains back to Belgium.
