The Lethal Sting of Jellyfish

Published

I will never forget the searing pain when I was first stung by a jellyfish. It was an experience that left me shocked, imagining how a child could endure such pain.

Early one February morning, on Galas Beach in Dipolog City, I encountered this deadly creature. The pain was excruciating, akin to being struck by a spiked whip. I hurriedly exited the water and sought help from local fishermen.

A fisherman advised me to apply vinegar to the affected area to ease the pain. Yes, the pain goes away, but the itching of my body took its place and it did not make me feel well. I couldn’t sleep properly for 3 days. Desperate for relief, my wife and I visited a doctor who prescribed allergy medication, gradually erasing the haunting memory of the jellyfish encounter.

Tragically, the threat of jellyfish became all too real when a 10-year-old child lost their life to a jellyfish sting in Araceli, Palawan. This incident marked the first reported fatality from a jellyfish sting in the area. According to reports on “State of the Nation,” the victim exhibited symptoms of anaphylactic shock, including frothing at the mouth and nose, upon arrival at the hospital.

In light of this heartbreaking event, I urge all mothers to be vigilant when visiting beaches, especially during the warmer months when jellyfish are known to frequent coastal areas. Consult local authorities or marine experts to determine the specific jellyfish season before planning any beach outings. Let us remain vigilant and prioritize the safety of our loved ones in the face of such deadly threats.

A refreshing new attraction has opened its gates in Pagadian City — the Pagadian City Water Park, situated along the scenic Baywalk in Barangay Santiago. Officially launched today, the facility is now open to the public and is already drawing excitement from locals and nearby residents.

The newly constructed water park offers a variety of family-friendly amenities designed for leisure and recreation. From splash zones for kids to shaded lounging areas, the park adds a vibrant new layer to the city’s popular Baywalk destination.

In a welcome move, all facilities within the park are currently free to use, as there is no ordinance or legislation yet in place allowing the local government to collect usage fees. This makes it a budget-friendly option for families looking to cool off and enjoy quality time outdoors.

City officials expressed optimism about the water park’s potential to boost activity in the Baywalk area, anticipating increased foot traffic and greater public engagement. The project is part of the city’s broader effort to enhance public spaces and promote tourism and recreation within Pagadian.

John also emphasized that the money symbolized his commitment to their marriage. For him, their union wasn’t an impulsive decision, and the cash gift served as a tangible promise of support and love.

As an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Australia, John worked tirelessly to save this amount of money. He often worked nearly 14 hours a day, sacrificing sleep to support his parents and save for his future family.

John shared his dedication to fulfilling promises to both his parents and his wife, saving Php1 million to surprise her on their wedding day.

He initially invested the money with a friend in the Philippines working in real estate to grow his savings while waiting for the wedding day. He acknowledged God’s guidance and support throughout this journey.

As they embark on married life, John and his wife Jamaica plan to invest the money in real estate, using the interest as a financial cushion and securing their future children’s well-being.

Despite the overwhelming online response, John and Jamaica didn’t expect their wedding to go viral. John is grateful to inspire others through his grand gesture, which was meant to show his love and commitment to his wife and her family.

However, not everyone was pleased with the gesture. Brushing off these comments, John chooses to focus on the most important aspect—their wedding.
