At the same time, the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) of the Philippine Army also marked the Day of Valor, paying tribute to the bravery of those who defended Bataan and Corregidor.

The 10th Infantry “Agila” Division of the Philippine Army paid tribute to the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of Filipino soldiers in their continuous pursuit of peace and national development. The division concluded their message with a patriotic salute: “Maligayang Araw ng Kagitingan! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”

In Davao City, Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain led the 83rd Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration held at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument. In his speech, Quitain honored the courage of Filipino soldiers during World War II and encouraged the public to reflect on their legacy with renewed patriotism.

“Let us remember the sacrifices of our heroes, many of whom endured unimaginable hardships—not for personal gain, but to secure the freedom and peace we enjoy today,” he stated.

Quitain also urged Filipinos to draw strength from the defenders of 1942, remain vigilant, and work hand in hand to build a strong and united nation.

Former police official Isidro S. Lapeña also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of confronting modern-day battles such as corruption and disinformation. He voiced concern over the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, urging that it should not overshadow the former leader’s contributions—particularly his aggressive campaign against illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte led separate ceremonies honoring the fallen members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“We must honor their memory by building a nation that will never again suffer the same pain and hardship,” the Vice President said in her message.

Historic Election: Cardinal Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV, the First American Pontiff

Published

In a landmark moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. His election on May 8, 2025, marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy, signaling a new chapter for the global Catholic community.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Robert Prevost is a member of the Augustinian order. He dedicated much of his pastoral career to missionary work in Peru, advocating for the poor and voiceless. His deep commitment to social justice and humility in service earned him respect within the Church. In 2023, he was appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, roles that elevated his prominence leading into the conclave.

Pope Leo XIV’s choice of name pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, known for his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the rights and conditions of workers. This nod indicates a continued emphasis on social teachings and the Church’s role in advocating for justice and dignity.

In his inaugural Mass held in the Sistine Chapel, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern over society’s increasing focus on technology, wealth, and success at the expense of spiritual values. He emphasized the Church’s mission to be a “beacon that illuminates the dark nights of this world,” urging a return to faith and compassion.

The election of Pope Leo XIV has been met with widespread acclaim. Leaders from around the world, including U.S. President Donald Trump and King Charles, extended their congratulations. In Peru, where Pope Leo XIV served extensively, citizens celebrated the elevation of someone they consider one of their own.

As the first North American pope and the first from an English-speaking country since the 12th century, Pope Leo XIV’s papacy is poised to bridge cultural divides and address contemporary challenges facing the Church. His background suggests a continued commitment to social justice, inclusivity, and dialogue with global leaders.

The formal inauguration Mass for Pope Leo XIV is scheduled for May 18, 2025. Catholics worldwide look forward to his leadership in guiding the Church through the complexities of the modern era.

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR — A man from Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay, identified as Eric (also referred to as Brod Eric), was severely injured after being attacked by a crocodile named Lalay when he entered its enclosure, reportedly out of affection for animals.

According to a Facebook post that went viral, Eric lives near the crocodile’s enclosure and has always considered himself an animal lover. He allegedly treats animals of all kinds as friends. On the day of the incident, Eric decided to approach the crocodile’s enclosure and even spoke to the reptile, believing he could interact with it safely.

He initially interpreted the crocodile wagging its tail as a sign of friendliness. Encouraged by this, Eric entered the enclosure. However, the crocodile suddenly bit his leg and dragged him into the water. He was unable to escape and was reportedly tossed around by the crocodile.

Rescue efforts were delayed as the crocodile’s owner took time to arrive, and local police hesitated to intervene, fearing consequences from harming a protected animal. Eric was only released after the owner arrived and managed to call off the crocodile.

Eric is currently being treated for his injuries at Margosatubig Regional Hospital in Zamboanga del Sur.

Contrary to speculation online, Eric is not mentally unstable. He is a graduate of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City, holding a degree in Education. He had previously applied to join the Philippine National Police (PNP), but the application did not proceed due to the recent incident.

The act was not a publicity stunt, according to those close to him, but rather a reflection of his deep compassion for animals—a passion that unfortunately led to this dangerous encounter.

Friends and community members are asking for prayers for his speedy recovery.
